"Pleurodeli-“ derives from "Pleurodelidae”, taxonomic family name for newts.

“-Mas" derives from "Mas-culine or Male".


While the term Pleurodelimas describes male Japanese Fire-Bellied Newts, “ Pleurodelifem” describes female Japanese Fire-Bellied Newts.
